Chair Yoga Teachers

Janaki

A recovering CPA and former partner of an accounting firm, previously struggling with burnout, depression and anxiety, Janaki as a new person, living a happy and fulfilling life.

Trained in classical Sivananda hatha yoga Janaki is paying forward the gifts and benefits that she receives through yoga and meditation, offering a similar effect on other peoples’ lives – helping people to heal their minds, bodies and souls with a body positive experience in a safe and non-judgmental space for all, 1 hour at a time.

Anathèle

For almost 12 years now, Anathèle has been passionate about yoga. In 2019, she completed her Hatha yoga teacher certification at PranaShanti Studio in Ottawa. She has since completed many additional trainings, including those for Baptist style power yoga, chair yoga, accessible yoga, regenerative yoga and Yin yoga.

She has found in yoga not only a practice that promotes daily wellness, but also a wonderful community of people who want to make the world a better place. Yoga has quickly become for Anathele not only a way of life, but also a way to connect with oneself, and with others. She hopes to make this practice accessible and inspiring to all, as she is passionate about sharing yoga.

Brenda

After retiring from teaching English to newcomers at Algonquin College, Brenda ran a B&B from her home in rural Kanata for six years. When she sold the house she still wasn’t ready to retire and spent a couple of years pet sitting & dog walking while thinking about what her next phase was going to be. On the advice of a very insightful woman who suggested she persue her long time love of yoga, specialising in Chair Yoga, she enrolled in Michael Hutkins‘ Chair Yoga Teacher Training at PranaShanti Yoga Centre.

That got her hooked and she went on to complete her 200 hour yoga Teacher Training at PranaShanti. She now teaches Chair Yoga for an online company called goboomerang, some private students and volunteer teaches a group of seniors at the local Resource Centre, currently all on Zoom.

Barbara

Barbara has been practicing yoga since 2010, when she needed some gentle strength building range of motion exercise to recover from a broken knee.  Since then she has grown to appreciate the many gifts of daily practice that go beyond the physical.  Barbara is a graduate of the 200 hour teacher training at Ashtanga Ottawa, and chair yoga teacher training with Mike Hutkins.  “I believe yoga sneaks up on you.  Many of us start practicing yoga to “exercise”, only to find it teaches us to breathe, to find peace in our day to day, while awakening our most authentic self.”

Zofia

Formerly an occupational therapist, Zofia has been teaching yoga since 2015. It all started with a year-long Yoga Teacher Training Program that sparked something new and unexpected in her… then one class a week, then two, then three… then more trainings in Yin Yoga and Chair Yoga… until teaching yoga became her full-time job! Zofia loves sharing the philosophy and practices of yoga, including posture practice, meditation, and chanting. Her primary aims are to teach in a way that’s meaningful and relevant to her students, so they too can experience the benefits of this amazing practice.

Tobey Hayden

Tobey has been practicing yoga casually since 2013. She has practiced kundalini, Bhakti, Shivanunda, and aerial yoga. After suffering an injury in 2015, she was inspired by her colleagues and friends to take her practice to the next level. In 2018 she completed her 200-hour HYTT training with PranaShanti and enrolled in the 300-hour HYTT training in 2020.

Tobey launched her teaching working with local communities, offering bi-lingual chair yoga, child and family classes, and most recently stand-up paddleboard yoga (SUP yoga). She has been teaching at retirement living and senior centers with Michael Hutkins since 2019 and is now well versed in the delivery of yoga classes online and in person.

In addition, due to her healing journey, she is a firm believer in holistic healing and has completed certification in cupping, hot stones massage, and reflexology. She hopes to complete her massage certification shortly.
